Key Differences Between Insulation Materials
There is a wide range of materials available to insulate homes. Some are bulky fiber materials like fiberglass, rock and slag wool and cellulose; others are rigid foam boards; and still others are sleek foils. The different types of insulation materials vary in their thermal resistance, known as R-value. The R-value tells how well the material resists conductive and convective heat flow in the walls, floors and ceilings of a building.
Some of the more attic insulation materials are blanket batts, rolls or strips; foam board; and blown-in insulation (see Table 1 below). Foam insulation such as polystyrene or polyisocyanurate is most commonly used for foundation walls, floor sheathing and attic hatches. Foam block insulation, which is often installed as part of an insulated concrete form (ICF) or a concrete wall, is also quite effective in preventing heat loss.
Insulation can help lower electricity bills by reducing the need for heating and cooling systems; it can also help reduce the build-up of heat in spaces such as garages and unfinished attics.
